ADHD is not just a childhood problem, it affects many adults even if they were never diagnosed as a child. Scientists aren’t sure exactly what causes ADHD, they think it's likely caused by environment, social norms, genes or brain chemistry. Many adults struggle their lives with unrecognized ADHD symptoms. They haven’t received help because they assumed that their chronic difficulties were caused by others impairments that did not respond to usual treatment.
In adults, attention deficit /hyperactivity disorder often looks quite different than in children and the symptoms are unique for each individual. Some of the common symptoms are:
- Hyperactivity — restlessness, agitation, trouble being still, talking excessively, bored easily
- Impulsivity — poor self control, acting recklessly or spontaneously without regard for consequences, jabbering and interrupting others, poor discipline
- Difficulty in concentrating — poor listening skills, frequent daydreaming, simultaneous thoughts, easily distracted, forgetfulness.
- Trouble emotion — explosive, temper, trouble staying motivated, hypersensitivity to criticism, easily frustrated and stress, low self-esteem, frequent seeking attention and care from others.
The symptoms of ADHD can contribute to a variety of health issues not only emotions but also physical including massive weight loss or gain, severe eating disorder, poor personal hygiene etc. It can also affect on job, relationship, financial, career and responsibilities.
Almost everyone has some similar symptoms of ADHD at some point in their lives. Therefore, many adults with ADHD aren’t aware they have it, they knew that every task and daily functioning are challenging to everyone.
When symptoms are severe enough to cause ongoing problems in more than one area of life and threaten the daily activities, it is time to reach out to doctor or psychological counselor for better treatment.
Treatment for ADHD is similar to all age group which includes medication, psychological counseling or attending psychotherapy program and treatment for mental health condition.
